Clergy and other leaders in faith-inspired organizations are on the front lines protecting community members from financial exploitation. Elder financial exploitation can be committed by strangers or by caregivers, family members, or others known to the older adult. A free webinar from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), a federal agency, will help clergy and other leaders be even more effective in protecting older members of their faith communities. The webinar will feature:
- Training on using Money Smart for Older Adults to prevent and respond to scams targeting older adults
- An overview of the work of adult protective services (APS) agencies, including addressing concerns that people sometimes have on referring suspected financial exploitation to their local agency
SPEAKERS:
- Lisa Schifferle, Senior Policy Analyst, Office for Older Americans, CFPB. An expert in scam prevention and consumer protection, Ms. Schifferle leads the Managing Someone Else’s Money financial caregiving program as well as the Money Smart for Older Adults scam awareness program. She also supports the Office’s work to combat elder financial exploitation through network collaboration and age-friendly banking.
- Jennifer Spoeri, Executive Director, National Adult Protective Services Association (NAPSA). Prior to her current position as executive director at NAPSA, Ms. Spoeri was director of APS in Philadelphia, managing a staff of 70, directing the full array of APS functions and programs, and coordinating with a variety of community-based partners.
